Possability People Welcomes New Plan For Disabled People

New plans by Brighton and Hove City Council to include disabled people’s voices in decisions about the city have been welcomed by local disabled people’s charity, Possability People.

Brighton and Hove’s Accessible City Strategy aims to create a welcoming, accessible, inclusive environment for disabled people living, working and visiting.

It will do this by setting up a new Disability Panel. The Panel will be made up of disabled people and Disabled People’s Organisations so their expertise and experience can inform and guide plans. There will also be a new Wider Reference Group, where disabled people and organisations can safely feedback on  how the city and council services can become more accessible.

Gerladine Des Moulins, Chief Executive of Possability People, and Chair of the Disabiltiy Panel, says:

“This is a really important step in the way the city evolves to become a more accessible and inclusive place for disabled people who live, work and visit it.

“We look forward to opportunities to work together, particularly at the start of projects and plans, where the lived experiences of disabled can be used to inform their direction. Whether that’s planning buildings and outside spaces, or planning citywide services. By including a wide range of experience at the outset, there is potential to save time, money and more challenging problems further down the line”.

Participants in both groups will be paid for their attendance time.
